NZ HERALD – Interislander ferry Kaiarahi has ‘dramatic’ hole in hull after berthing incident

This article is about the interisland ferry Kaiarahi which has been canceled after a large hole was ripped in the bottom of the boat. The Wellington harbourmaster (Grant Nalder) said the hole looks quite dramatic. You can actually see through to the other side of the ship.

Grant Nalder said the Kaiarahi was damaged at its 10pm berthing on Sunday night and the gash was about one meter across! The ship was damaged while sailing to Picton. Once they found out, they had to sail back to Wellington.

With construction costs rising, KiwiRail has to pay $1.45 billion for a Interislander replacement project. It will most likely be fixed by September 2024. The Interislander would have to get approval before the ferry could leave from Aotea Quay.

This is very interesting to me because this is the first time this has happened to the Interlslander in many years. I have been on this ship before, and if this happened while I was on there, I would be panicking about the car and my whanau.

The purpose of this article is to inform people that you won’t be able to travel down to the South island just yet. There is also another ferry running down to the South Island too. But it’s not as flash as the Kaiarahi Interislander Ship. You could just imagine the trouble this would to all the travelers over this summer.

Leadership

What is a leader? To me a leader is someone that makes the right decision for the people and environment. But what makes a great leader? A leader really should have these values, To be Understandable, Relatable, Respectful and the main value, humble. Being humble means to not show off and to be kind and respectful to everyone. If you are humble you are a natural leader and will probably be the next governor or prime minister!

A leader that displays these values, to me is Whina Cooper. Whina cooper is one of the most historical leaders in nz, because she lead her people into fighting for their rights, and to getting their land back

In conclusion I would to end off with an inspiring quote said by Barack Obama – “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way. Tena koutou tena koutou tena koutou katoa.

Aotearoa Human Rights Event – Whina Cooper

Whina Cooper : Hikoi

In 1975 Whina Cooper led a group of Maori and pakeha human rights protesters. They were going to walk from Pangaru to the parliament to protest Maori rights. Because when Whina was young the pakeha were very unfair to her people and took their land.

The protesters walked for over 1 month. They traveled 640 km all the way to wellington. Along the way. They would stop at a variety of marae so the mana whenua around the area could sign the memorial of rights. Over 60,000 maori/pakeha signed it, which is insane!

When the group arrived in Wellington the numbers nearly doubled because of the pakeha that supported us. They arrived on the 13 of october. They gave the memorial of rights to the government and he signed it. But it took nearly a month for the government to do something.

I am writing this story because it gives us a key example of  human rights. And how people would fight for what was right to them and their people.

Cultural interaction Pukamahi Slide

In the first section of the book we watch a classic bro town episode. We had to tell facts about 5 characters like, Siona, People, and jeff da maori. We also had to identify the different cultures in our class and interview them. I interviewed huirau which is from samoa and tonga.I really liked watching the bro town movie

The first part of this section I had to look at the newspaper article of the great moments in New Zealand history part 1. Then I had to find out what the items in the article represented. We then read about the difference between the english and maori texts of the treaty of waitangi and it was cool. I enjoyed Reading the newspaper article

In the last section we learnt about the traditional and iconic foods from all the different countries all around the world. Looking at the food

Slide

Taonga tuku iho

In this social studies lesson we completed a slade named taonga tuku iho. In this slide there were questions like historical architecture and taonga that have been passed down over the years. There were a total of 6 slides to do. We included photos to the slide to make it pop out.

We investigated what important taonga was handed down. In my whanau one important taonga is a rare moa leg bone which was handed down for centuries( I think ). In my house we have heaps of exotic taonga hand down and recipes for yummy desserts.

We also had to type about special architecture such as marae, memorials and churches.
